Graduate Program in Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics offers an international graduate program taught in English leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics.

M.Sc. Program

Requirements: Applicants for admission to the M.Sc program are expected to hold a B.Sc. degree or equivalent and have a mathematical preparation that is comparable to a B.Sc degree in mathematics from an Israeli university. In particular, applicants should be familiar with the material which is required for the four basic graduate classes in Algebra, Analysis, Geometry/Topology and Logic/Set Theory. Strong applicants with insufficient preparation may be admitted contingent upon the completion of supplementary coursework during the first year of the program.

Application: The Mathematics Department Application requires submission of the following documents:

  1. Transcripts (2 originals)
  2. At least 2 letters of recommendation, preferably from Mathematics professors who know the applicant well, and who can comment on the applicant's abilities, accomplishments, and potential.
  3. GRE Mathematics Subject test score
  4. TOEFL exam score, for applicants whose native language is not English and who have studied for less than 3 years in an English-speaking country.
Applicants who obtained a B.Sc. degree from an Israeli institution only need to provide transcripts and letters of recommendation (items 1 and 2 above). The following mailing address should be used for application materials:

Financial aid is available for strong applicants.

Program details: During their studies in the M.Sc. program, students are required to complete at least 26 course units of coursework, and write a Master's thesis. The course work must include:

  1. At least two courses from the following list:
    • Advanced Analysis
    • Basic Concepts in Topology and Geometry
    • Noncommutative Algebra or Commutative and Homological Algebra
    • One course in Logic or Set Theory
  2. At least two advanced seminars.
Course requirements may be waived when equivalent coursework has been completed elsewhere.

Ph.D. Program

Applicants for admission to the Ph.D program are expected to hold an M.Sc in Mathematics or equivalent. Applications should be submitted to the Kreitman School. Exceptional students can be admitted to a direct track in the Ph.D. program.
